43 Observations of a Creative Soul!
Aug 05, 2025
One for every year I’ve been alive.
I believe everyone is born creative.
It’s not something you have to earn, study for, or be chosen for.
It’s part of your DNA. Your soul. Your humanness.
But somewhere along the way, we get told to “grow up,” to be practical, to colour inside the lines. And little by little, we start to shrink the parts of us that used to light up.
We stop playing.
We stop imagining.
We stop expressing.
And that creativity, the wild, beautiful, messy kin, it starts to get buried under responsibility, rejection, perfectionism, and fear.
But here’s what I know for sure:
That spark is still in you.
Waiting.
Wriggling.
Ready to burst out the moment you say, “Yes, I’m still here.”
So on my 43rd birthday, I want to share with you 43 truths about what it means to be a creative soul—because no matter how far away from it you feel, these parts of you are still there.
1. You were born imaginative.
Yes, you. Even if it’s been a while. Even if you haven’t drawn, painted, or written in years. Your imagination is still alive, it's just waiting to be played with again.
2. You had imaginary friends or worlds as a child.
You created them effortlessly. That’s not weird, it’s genius. It's where your creative spark first spoke up.
3. Your mind runs like a high-speed train.
Fast. Furious. Full of ideas, detours, and unexpected magic.
4. You challenge what doesn’t make sense.
“Why are we doing it this way?” You’ve always asked the questions other people avoid.
5. You’ve felt “too much.”
Too sensitive. Too passionate. Too loud. That’s not a flaw, it’s your creative system in full colour.
6. You see stories in everything.
From a chipped mug to a stranger’s expression, your brain naturally builds narratives.
7. You get emotional about art.
Music, film, poetry, a single brushstroke, it can stop you in your tracks and stir something ancient in you.
8. You create better in solitude.
You need space to hear yourself think. To feel. To breathe.
9. You crave freedom more than stability.
Rules, boxes, and rigid schedules feel like straightjackets to your spirit.
10. You love making something from nothing.
That transformation is your soul food.
11. You resist conformity.
You don’t just want to fit in. You want to stand out, even if it scares you.
12. You’ve struggled to believe in yourself.
You create powerful work, but imposter syndrome still whispers in your ear.
13. You procrastinate, but not because you're lazy.
You’re waiting for the feeling. When it hits, you’re unstoppable.
14. You think in colour and pattern.
Your thoughts aren’t black and white, they’re textured, layered, and full of nuance.
15. You feel other people’s energy.
You walk into a room and know if something’s off. You’re emotionally tuned in.
16. You get overwhelmed easily.
Not because you’re weak, but because you’re deeply affected by the world around you.
17. You live between extremes.
Ecstatic highs. Deep lows. And everything in between.
18. You’re easily distracted… but also obsessively focused.
The paradox is real. When you're in the zone? Hours fly.
19. You start a million projects.
You love the excitement of beginnings. Finishing? Not always your strong point.
20. You express yourself through what you wear.
Your clothes are art. Self-expression. Armour. Mood board.
21. You notice beauty in broken things.
A cracked tile, a wrinkled face, an old book with worn edges, it all speaks to you.
22. You feel physically impacted by emotion.
Headaches, tension, fatigue, your body holds it all.
23. You resist rules (but secretly love a little structure).
Give you freedom with boundaries, and you’ll thrive.
24. You feel safest when creating.
It’s where you feel most like you.
25. You get overwhelmed by admin.
Spreadsheets, invoices, checkboxes, it’s not your love language.
26. You find inspiration everywhere.
A conversation, a leaf, a memory, a sentence, it’s all potential art.
27. You’re deeply nostalgic.
Old photos, old songs, old smells, they crack you wide open.
28. You forget to eat when you're in flow.
Creating becomes the only thing that matters.
29. You care (a lot) about making a difference.
Your work has meaning. You want it to matter.
30. You’ve doubted if you’re “creative enough.”
Spoiler: You are. Always have been.
31. You feel other people’s pain.
You’re an emotional sponge, and sometimes it’s heavy to carry.
32. You’ve been called dramatic.
But really, you’re just expressive. And passionate. And brave enough to feel.
33. You long for play.
Childlike joy. Wonder. Silliness. You miss it more than you admit.
34. You work better outside the 9–5.
Your creativity doesn’t clock in and out.
35. You can be your own worst critic.
You hold yourself to impossible standards, especially in your creative work.
36. You fall in love with ideas.
And sometimes people, too. But mostly ideas.
37. You never truly “grow up.”
And honestly? That’s a blessing.
38. You create emotional connections through your work.
It’s not just art. It’s a mirror. A message. A balm.
39. You crave meaningful conversations.
Small talk drains you. You want depth, honesty, and soul.
40. You notice what others miss.
The flicker of emotion, the detail in the corner, the quiet moment—that’s your gift.
41. You’ve used creativity to heal.
Your art has helped you survive things words couldn’t.
42. You are magic.
The way you think, feel, connect, it’s rare and radiant.
43. You’re not alone.
Whether you feel wildly inspired or completely blocked, your creativity is still there. Still you. And it’s never too late to come home to it.
Final Thoughts from Me on My 43rd Birthday
If there’s one thing I’ve learned after 43 years, it’s this:
Creativity isn’t a talent. It’s a truth.
And it lives in everyone.
So if yours has gone quiet lately, that’s OK. Life can do that. But don’t believe it’s gone forever.
Because it’s still in there, waiting for a way out.
Through paint. Through words. Through movement. Through baking, building, designing, dreaming, whatever feels true.
You don’t have to be good at it.
You just have to come back to it.
So here’s to the next chapter.
To rediscovering.
To expressing.
To creating for the joy of it.
To living out loud.
And to knowing you are, and always have been… a creative soul.
Happy Birthday to me :-)
